After the first part of this reportage Olympiapark: Waldbühne and Clubhaus (Part I), we keep on walking in the area to have a look at all the other buildings and decorations.

From the Clubhaus to the main buildings on the other side of the soccer field (used by the fooball team Hertha Berlin), there are riding stables by a horse riding school, the Frauenhaus (House of Women) and some other small buildings.

On the other side of the area there's a complex of buildings made in a U shape with a outdoot swimming pool in the center of it. All around there are different decorations from Nazi time like an original nazi-adler (eagle) with a scraped off swastika, two bulls guarding the entrance of the area and a huge statue of a resting athlet as well as low relief serie on the buildings ledge, taken from statue decorations of classical era and harmoniusly arranged.

The complex of buildings and the open spaces of the sports forum in the north were taken by the British Allies as headquarters after the Second World War and were inaccessible to the public.

The U complex was originally made with a Swimmhaus, a Swimmhalle and a Große Turnhalle, while on the other side of the swimming pool there's the Haus des Deutschen Sports of which we'll talk next time for the Part III.

We've already talked one year ago about the Borsig Locomotives, which was in 1872 the largest locomotives' company in Europe, and in addition to the Baldwin Locomotive Works in the United States, the world's second largest locomotive supplier.

Among the other buildings in Tegel, there's the Borsigturm, built in 1922-24 and considered the first skyscraper in Berlin.

Conrad and Ernst von Borsig gave at the Berlin architecture professor Eugen Schmohl (that a little later designed the Ullsteinhaus in Tempelhof) the contract for the design of an office building, which was for the first time extend beyond the permitted height for industrial buildings of 5 floors.

The 65 m tower served initially as a water tower, by installing a water tank on the ninth floor, but then it was used as an office building, a symbol of the Borsigwerke. In the 1970s and 1990s it was renovated and reused as an office building. The interior was not accessible to visitors until 2009.

But now we've been able to get inside the tower (the 10th floor is for rent by Meistersaal im Borsigturm GmbH) and to take these pictures of the inside and of the view of the Tegel's area.
I've decided to open a new blog on Berlin's building (totally in English).

I live in Berlin since 2 years now and I'm going all around the city for my personal projects, for work and for fun, 'cause I love Berlin.
There are some areas that are very known, but others that you need to know, with their buildings, parks, and history. I'll try to discover them with the help of some collaborations.
Berlin is a work-in-progress city, full of scaffoldings, baustelle, buildings that change their use very often and I'll try to map the best of it here, with photos, maps and some historical infos on the places.

this is the new link, follow me.

I've started this project almost one year ago, not long after I moved to Berlin. But after the original idea I've got some technical problems to produce what I had in mind.
First problem was the bowl, here in Berlin I haven't found something so big, I've ordered it in Italy, but they were not going to ship it to me here. I've been in Italy to collect it and a friend of mine, Fabio Mattei - diving instructor - has helped me to create the final version of the bowl, putting together a neoprene neck glued to the plastic bowl.
I've tried the bowl on myself first, if i was going to ask people to go inside it, I had to know how it feels.
And it's a real strange feeeling, the bowl is heavy cause of the water, the air is not pure inside (although you've got some holes to breath from) and the feeling is to be wet, but your body is not, just your neck and your face.
After a while you start to relax (mostly) and you start to play with it, with different levels of water, to make it shake, to go underwater and play with air bubbles. In the beginning there were a lot of different situations i was thinking about and I've spent a lot of time collecting ideas and objects, but during the project and together with the interaction with people, I've changed them a lot.
Then the great problem was a photographic one: how to get the bowl to be full enlighted and round in the photo? I've first asked to Ema Discordant, a good friend and a photographer, to help me as a model, to understand how to get the proper light on. The first photos were good, but there was something missing. Then, working together with Sergio Assabbi (a very great argentinian photographer), I've decided to work with fluorecent light tubes and I really liked them, not only for the shape on the bowl, but also for the lighting result on the skin and their long range shadows.
In the last years, working on studio photography, I'd always the problem to be too much clean, with too much attention to the details with a significant loss of depth, energy and warmness of the image. So I've decided to have just a very simple canvas background, with the colour of the water, not pressed and with wrinkles.
And I really like the final result, although some friends told me that the white line in the background was distracting the attention of the beholder. This line is for me creating the illusion of an underwater world in the fake underwater scene and the light diffraction on the bowl borders is helping this illusion in the photos where there's no water inside the bowl.

I've asked some friends to be part of the project and my first 2 victims have been Alexandra and Jana. With Alexandra I tried to understand all the possible situations and the name DEAF is comed with her, when I asked her to write something on the steamed bowl, something that was related with the feeling inside the bowl and she wrotes DEAF in Cyrillic. Jana has been the first one to try water inside the bowl and I was a bit scared, also because it can be claustrophobic. The first result was funny, the part of the head underwater was magnified, something I had not thought about when i was planning it. Unfortunately I've then realised that the neck was too small for women and some water was falling during the photos (for some of them it has been a lot of water falling down, btw).
I've published on some websites a Call for Participation for actors, performers and normal people as well and I've been very glad to see how different people, with different backgrounds, have been able to react in a total different way to my project. Of course I'm been amazed by actors and performers, cause they're able to enter in their own world, to enter another dimension and to play in new ways with my original idea. For all the others, it has been a big surprise to see how they've adapt so well to my suggestions.
The final work is made by 18 photos and a side collection of other 12 that I'll publish later.
You can have a look at the collection here: www.norte.it/deaf.Dario Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07399834365584837886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9017386025622684487.post-56404225795201019852012-06-19T05:38:00.001-07:002014-03-12T14:04:51.697-07:00Not walking, but running
At the Tempelhof Airport of Berlin is running "The World Is Not Fair - The Great World's Fair 2012", a very huge installation based exhibition, with different building and experiences to be part of.

One of this is very simple, is “The Syrian protesters are recording their own deaths.”

It's very SIMPLE and TRAGIC at the same time... you run in a corridor made with the running videoclip frames of a men
filming his own death. And on the shooting frame on the floor they put a metal step, so you can get impressed by a self-made noise. After the shoot you'll not be able to see the man, but just the sky from a personal death perspective.
Rabih Mroué: Double Shooting

“The Syrian protesters are recording their own deaths.”
I found myself on the Internet navigating from one site to another, searching for facts that could tell me more about death in Syria. I found a lot of material, but one group of videos grabbed me in particular. These videos show the moment of eye contact between sniper and cameraman, when the gun’s line of sight and the camera’s lens meet: Double Shooting. We see and hear the sniper shooting, and through the movement of the mobile phone we witness the cameraman fall to the ground.

This installation is a re-enactment of a video clip from the ongoing Syrian revolution. It is a tunnel of 45 meters long, consists of 72 frames that make a stop motion sequence, calculated as 4 frames per second. In order to see the video in real time, we should try to time our run from the entrance of the installation to the exit in 18 seconds.
On the other side there will be a text spread on each board. It reflects on the act of photographic documentation in Syria as ›Now and Here‹ and its relationship with death, and how we perceive these photos ›Now but There‹…

Rabih Mroué lives in Beirut. He is an actor, director, and playwright, and a Contributing Editor in the Lebanese quarterly "Kalamon" and the theatre journal "TDR", based in New York. He is one of the founders and executive board of Beirut Art Center association (BAC). His works include: The Inhabitants of images (2008), Who’s Afraid of Representation (2005) and others.

And it was less planned to enter inside the buildings there, so this is just a very fast view of what it is and how it looks like.
Beelitz is one of the most known places here in Berlin, when the topic is Abandonware.

from WIKI:
Beelitz-Heilstätten, a district of the town, is home to a large hospital complex of about 60 buildings including a cogeneration plant erected from 1898 on according to plans of architect Heino Schmieden. Originally designed as a sanatorium by the Berlin workers' health insurance corporation, the complex from the beginning of World War I on was a military hospital of the Imperial German Army. During October and November 1916, Adolf Hitler recuperated at Beelitz-Heilstätten after being wounded in the leg at the Battle of the Somme. In 1945, Beelitz-Heilstätten was occupied by Soviet forces, and the complex remained a Soviet military hospital until 1995, well after the German reunification. In December 1990 Erich Honecker was admitted to Beelitz-Heilstätten after being forced to resign as the head of the East German government.[...]The remainder of the complex, including the surgery, the psychiatric ward, and a rifle range, was abandoned in 2000. As of 2007, none of the abandoned hospital buildings or the surrounding area were secured, giving the area the feel of a ghost town.

I've always been fascinated by old places, abandoned, but as a photographer for me now, it's very hard to go into a place such this and not thinking about a shooting there, with people, to tell a story. Beelitz it's amazing, from inside as well as from the outside, but unfortunately vandalism has mostly destroyed it and there's a very few opaque sense of human stories inside. No objects, no furnitures anymore.

I'll be back there for sure, to explore more this place, but i guess my idea will be to bring a story there.Dario Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07399834365584837886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9017386025622684487.post-55023476666175320022011-12-27T15:13:00.000-08:002014-03-12T14:05:12.136-07:00Till the end of the YearThe year is going to end and i've not written here for a while, too many things all together and in the end this doesn't look like as a travel anymore. It's my life, with a lot of different moods, possibilities and energies. I'm thinking about going back on travel, but this will be a late next year possibility, maybe India, maybe Mongolia (this opportunity shows up for the first time without any advise at my grandmother's death and since then it's still in my head).

Everything here is grey, no snow, but all grey... it's very uncommon for this period and in conjunction with my mood is very hard to handle.
I'm waiting for the next here to come, to find new energies and to go back to put them in new projects and new relationships.Dario Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07399834365584837886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9017386025622684487.post-2090906184489496052011-09-29T13:02:00.000-07:002011-09-29T13:02:29.747-07:0010 Months. Genesis of a new roomTen months in Berlin.
It's still summer outside, maybe is gettin colder, but the sun is still amazing!! Wonderful days.
Finally my life is coming to have a direction, maybe not perfect, but now it's a life in Berlin, 100%.

End of September: new job, new room, new friends. Very intense time, i'm really tired, but i'm happy.
After months spent to study German i'm working in German, with my photography !!!

The summer has been very hard, some difficult situations with people, difficulty to find a job (Berlin is not a rich city, there are a lot of people that take money from the goverment and sometimes this is not good also to find really professional situations, like the very bad experiences i've got before the summer) and then also personal emotional/sentimental situations (lost in traslation, cultural gaps with different people) were very stressful to manage and all this, all together, was killing me.

Now i can write with the smile on my face and a new room is something amazing to start with. I hope i'll use it with my new photographic projects.

Stay tuned!!!!

PS. a special thanks to whom has been with me these two last weeks, making all this very AmazingDario Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07399834365584837886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9017386025622684487.post-5355982351667542712011-09-04T13:33:00.000-07:002011-09-04T13:33:32.638-07:00Travelling without movingTwo days ago i've received this wonderful gift.

It's a shirt from Hutsuls, "an ethno-cultural group of Ukrainian highlanders who for centuries have inhabited the Carpathian mountains, mainly in Ukraine, the northern extremity of Romania (in the areas of Bukovina and Maramureş)." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutsuls)

"The Hutsuls are a ethno-cultural group with that has had a distinct self-identity for a few hundred years. The moved into the Carpathian highlands between the 14th and 18th centuries. Because of their isolation in the mountains and resistance to change they were able to preserve their traditional way of life, based on cattle and sheep herding and craftsmanship, despite falling under the rule of many different governments. Even the Soviets let them continue their traditional lifestyle and crafts. With a degree of autonomy and strong communities, they achieved a noticeably higher standard of living than other people in the region."
http://www.tryukraine.com/carpathians/hutsul.shtml

To receive a gift is normally something very important to me,
and usually, when i'm on travel, has happend to me to receive
particular traditional gifts. I'm proud of it.

And I'm very proud to be here, in Berlin, and someone has brought
something so special and so related with his own culture to me.

Thanks a lot.Dario Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07399834365584837886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9017386025622684487.post-4816128743203395232011-06-16T12:57:00.000-07:002011-06-16T12:57:53.173-07:00My blog for english guests<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/norte_it/401766835/" title=""Corre el agua, corre el agua Yemayà" by Norte_it [Dario J Laganà], on Flickr"><img alt=""Corre el agua, corre el agua Yemayà"" height="500" src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/165/401766835_508ad3fc4a.jpg" width="345" />
This blog has been started in Italian (my mothertongue), but now I'm living in Berlin and i've started to write some threads in English, so some people might found interesting understanding what is it and why i'm writing this blog.

I'm a traveller. I've started to travel 10 years ago and travels, together with photography, represent the main aim of my being. So I've started this blog to collect impressions, ideas, thoughts and advices to whom, like me, is on this path o would like to start it, maybe having an ispiration from it.

"Elefante in cammino" means "Walking elephant", 'cause I've started travelling on foot and also because "walking" is something which is not finished, it's something still on going.

In the Buddhist culture, the elephant is a marvellous animal and in the Dhammapada (ancient text on Buddha's teachings) is celebrated with a full Chapter (23). To the elephant are given many skills: endurance, patience, strenght and orderliness.
I'm been very lucky to be part of this Carnival of Cultures, who takes place every year in Berlin/Kreuzberg. It's a huge event with 100 wagons and thousends and thousends of visitors on the streets (mostrly drunked!) for 3 days.
I've been invited by my Hungarian friend Audrey. She asked me to go there as a photographer and I've been really pleased to be part of the show, with my gifted red Hungarian tshirt with black moustaches on it.
The hungarians are really crazy, in a good way...their tradition looks coming from circus, with juggles, mimes and wading people. Those people belong mostly to the first generation of Hungarians in Berlin, coming directly from the country and they're mixing traditions with innovation.

They made a very good job, with design ideas, logo, claim campaign, sponsoring, clothing design (every person had his personal character, funny, stereotyped and absolutely unique). Together with them there was a group of traditional hungarian dancers and free people there to help.

Last but not least a very good selection of music with a DJ coming directly from Hungary... and the music was so great, that at the end there were a group of common people following the wagon.

And they win the contest as 2nd!!!

ITA:
E alla fine hanno vinto il concorso come miglior carro, piazzandosi secondi!!!Dario Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07399834365584837886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9017386025622684487.post-59661554135408088302011-05-26T03:21:00.000-07:002011-05-27T04:37:25.873-07:00Sad / Triste / TraurigI've been in Italy for some days... back to my house, to my photographic studio, ...and packing my stuffs, i was not able to bring all my things with me... and choosing between my travel collected stuffs and my books... something has been left behind.
I was born surrounded by books, my family had a collection of more then 4-5000 books... and i remember clearly how i was going playing with the small plastic soldiers fighting through the books and shelfs. So books have been part of my dreams, my escape technique.
Then i've started my own collection when i was 18 and now i've got more then 3-400 books, of whom i'm very proud.
Books and travel's objects are part of my life, of my story, my way of going around.

Today I do myself best wishes, for the first time as (a) Berliner citizen, to follow my dreams, to find my way, to the hard days and the joy of walking smiling with no real reason for this city, with no reason but the one to be here, to be alone and finaly free.

Abbiamo radici forti come alberi e in quelle ci siamo cresciuti.

Buonanotte.Dario Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07399834365584837886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9017386025622684487.post-69476707964834607782011-01-19T12:09:00.000-08:002011-01-19T12:09:22.901-08:00Berlino.

Dario Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07399834365584837886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9017386025622684487.post-82557482475772881912010-11-18T01:16:00.000-08:002010-11-18T01:17:40.004-08:00Berlino.
Dario Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07399834365584837886noreply@blogger.com
